Johns Hopkins English is an intimate, highly selective department with a long history of innovative scholarship, high research productivity, and superior teaching. Its faculty members’ specialties range from early modern to contemporary, with particular strengths in critical theory and interdisciplinary approaches to literature.
Its graduate and undergraduate programs are known especially for their training in attentive reading and the crafting of critical arguments. Hopkins English is, in addition, home to two lively lecture series, the scholarly journal ELH, and a tradition of vigorous intellectual exchange.
The Department of English is located in the recently renovated Gilman Hall, historic home of the humanities at Johns Hopkins.
